Concussion Safety & Michigan Law

At LYA, the safety of our athletes is our top priority. Concussions are serious injuries that require proper education, recognition, and management to ensure the well-being of every player. Michigan law mandates that all youth sports participants and their parents/guardians receive concussion education and adhere to established safety protocols.

What You Need to Know

Under Michigan law:

  • Education Requirement: All athletes and their parents/guardians must have access to educational materials about concussion risks, symptoms, and proper response.
  • Safety Attestation: During the registration process, families must acknowledge their understanding of concussion safety and agree to follow necessary protocols.
  • Return-to-Play Protocol: If a player is diagnosed with a concussion, they cannot return to athletic activities until they have completed the required recovery process. Specific medical clearance forms must be completed and submitted to LYA before the athlete is allowed to participate again.

Recognizing a Concussion

Concussions can occur from impacts to the head or body, causing the brain to move rapidly inside the skull. Symptoms may include:
✔ Headache or dizziness
✔ Nausea or vomiting
✔ Confusion or difficulty concentrating
✔ Sensitivity to light or noise
✔ Loss of consciousness (in some cases)

What to Do If a Concussion Is Suspected

  1. Remove the athlete from play immediately.
  2. Seek medical evaluation from a licensed healthcare professional.
  3. Follow the recommended recovery and return-to-play guidelines.
  4. Submit the necessary medical clearance forms before resuming sports participation.

By working together, we can keep our athletes safe and ensure they have the knowledge and support needed to recover properly. For more information or to access concussion forms and resources, please [link to relevant resources or contact details].
